Undercooled
It began around when I was 20 years old. And such a situation is soon remembered as an event and continues from a long time. It has been with you and me from one time. The story I am going to tell is such a long story. I clearly know about it. However, I am not sure whether I write by imagining a true nature remaining in my memory. It is named in several ways. Many people understand it under a word like a division of territory and cold war. I will not mention here what happened a long time ago, though it was a beginning. I made efforts to confirm the true nature for more than 2 years. Such action of mine was made possible since the time had been changed. I know people who did this kind of work with a clear purpose not long ago. However, my aimless action had an enough reason for someone else to take me to somewhere else in the past. Although all the artistic attempt did not lack in its purpose, the beginning of this work had no purpose to me since it was an action for a kind of an observer to do. I might have simply observed this and enjoyed a new and cold feeling provided by a landscape in which a function and a purpose were harmonized.
Such facilities under a repose for a long time mostly have a defense, not an attack, as a main purpose and have a common point of waiting for a war to come sometime. A bunker, hideout, defense wall, and defense line, etc. which a Korean adult man would know were the major objects that I observed. And all of them can be described in words like a disguise, construction, and arrangement. These military facilities disguise themselves, disclose a sort of a fictitious facade for a watcher, and try to hide their real nature, which is one of traditional methods of disguise in a military facility. In addition, the functional nature to determine a form is disclosed by using a solid concrete. For a defense wall to cut off a road, its function is performed by exploding a concrete. However, the defense walls, which had not performed their functions, have held out against the time in tension in their position. Such a time has become a space with losing its nature of time under a concept like a disguise or concealment. It is applied to a bunker and hideout as a military facility in the nature and gives an idea of looking at a method of a practical camouflage which seems to have been assimilated into a part of the nature. Nevertheless, the impression given by a nature of a long time looks beautiful regardless of a representation of a place. Such a beauty may have been greatly different from a sentiment in case a soldier from an art university drew a map in a bunker. However, it seems that he tried to express such a paradoxical beauty in his wall painting.
Such a paradoxical beauty is gradually disappearing under a desire of an economic development. Eunpyung New Town's construction site, in which a new town business as an exemplary work for an economic development in a suburb is implemented, discloses an inner structure of a military installation hidden in the course of digging in the ground and cutting a mountain like a site of a relic excavation. At the site, soldiers and workers instead of archaeologists conduct an excavation. Military relics disappearing in line with a desire which cannot be new like a new town can be seen as a section to show a political change and a social change toward a policy on the North Korea. This is a process for re-construction of a new desire as well as a dismantling of a sort of a constructed time. Such a landscape shows an orderly arrangement like a defense line at all times. This is a disguise of other area and concealment. However, it makes many people have a joyous imagination on the wealth. It seems that military facilities disappearing in front of a desire beyond a logic of a national security have not fulfilled their mission, but disappeared unjustly and reported an end to a cold war. Although they were born with a fate to be destroyed in any way, an advance warning is now made to be destroyed in front of other force, not an intrinsic purpose. Moreover, all the things including an ideology of the times and a political change inherent in a concrete get out of a gap in a solid-looking concrete and go somewhere else. They are built to satisfy all such needs and now going to somewhere else in a place of nothing. I do not know whether it is due to an effect of an unseen and transcendental power or a slow step of a time, which cannot be visualized. I simply know that a new meaning will be given to its empty space someday and that such a new nature can be an empty place again.
