Cola + Theque =
In the early 1990s, the government created Colatheque, a legitimate dance club that operates only during the daytime as a healthy cultural space for teenagers who drink only cola-like sodas. Colatheque, a combination of Cola and Theque, probably derived from the idea of combining the American Coca-Cola culture with theater-style cabaret. In this way, Colatheque has a typical hybrid and mixed character. It functions as a nightclub in the daytime as if it were out of the constraints of time. Reminiscent of the seventies and eighties, the main customer here are now middle-aged people who were teenagers in the early 90s. It is not known when Colatheque became an adult ballroom or when an adult ballroom became Colatheque. Colatheque was filled with "Jitterbug" and "Cha Cha Cha" instead of teenager's dance music. I artificially emphasized the color in the photo-editing process to exaggerate the splendor of the cheap culture revealed in the sign of the changed Colatheque. This exaggeration makes the empty dance hall look cheaper, revealing the lightness of Korea's cheap pop culture or subculture. Colatheque in the '90s is revived in a new era with an inexplicable change just like its name.
